This is a selection of the thirty-six collages I made with patients on the wards of St Mary’s Paediatric department. Most of the works were made in one-to-one sessions that were a playful investigation of what colour means to each of us, and how we can imagine it around us. We took the time to find the colours for walls, floors, doors, even the bins.
Giving the names to colours also helped to develop a sense of ownership over the choices, creating links with experiences inside and outside the hospital, happy and sad feelings, and allowed a space to be humorous and at times transgressive, so that the children felt allowed to express themselves fully and without restraint.
